In the middle of the Autumn term a meeting of the School Council was held where the one item on the agenda ,that caused confusion to everyone, was Year 11 Leavers Prom.
This was the first step by Deputy Headteacher Mrs Ellen Williams, to establish the kernel of an idea that we should celebrate Year 11 school leavers and celebrate the contribution they had made to the school during their time at Brynrefail.
From this tiny seed Prom 13 was established and grew to be one of the most beautiful celebrations ever held at Brynrefail.
In May the beauty of year 11 assembled in the school hall. The beauty of the ladies was stunning and it is not often we associate the word beauty with men but the men were stunning too. Before long the word had spread throughout the staff and they came to marvel at the sight with the occasional tear in sight.
Off they went to the Victoria Hotel in Llanberis where they partook of a tasty dinner and some would say an even tastier pudding!
What was clear was that none of those boys from year 11 were present but there was a host of young men. Not one young girl was present but a throng of the most beautiful young ladies that you’ve ever seen.
So there was tasting and eating, conversation and laughter, remembering and looking forward and those that were serving looked familiar as well.
Following the feast there was a disco and the awarding of the ‘Stars of the Year’ certificates that everyone had voted for. Everyone that received an award did so smiling with pleasure.
There was only one sour note – the celebration came to an end !
So the young men and women of year 11 left Ysgol Brynrefail. Perhaps, who knows, we shall welcome some back to the sixth form.
One thing we do know for sure. Each and every one of them will remember their Leaving Prom following the splendid arrangements by Mrs Ellen Williams.
